Support Bihar’s Homeless Families during the Monsoon
Thousands of Bihar’s homeless families have been living on the streets for decades. The homeless community is one of the most vulnerable groups in the city. For them living with insecurity is a part of life as they are constantly susceptible to threats, both natural and human-made. Many have been living in these conditions for generations even though they are citizens of this country who contribute immensely to its economy and public life by casting their votes during elections and earning their living through hard work as labourers and wage workers. Their situation worsens during the Patna monsoon in which it is difficult for them to maintain their fragile shelters. The city has just nine homeless shelters -- and none where families can stay together.
Smile Care Foundation is one of the only NGOs in Patna working to improve the lives of the city's 150,000 homeless citizens. We empower the homeless, mainly women, to understand their rights and gain access to essential documents and programmes, including food rations and government poverty-alleviation initiatives. Our task is enormous. We are a small team working to tackle one of the most difficult situations in the city.
For most of the families, these children are earning members as they spend their days in garbage compounds collecting materials to sell and earn food.
The parents somehow are okay to send their kids to our classes running in Slum Area for 4 hours a day, if the Children start receiving food during the Classes as it will ease the burden on them financially. If these parents send their kids for Education, it will be a huge motivation for other families in the slum to send their children to school as well.
In preparation for the monsoon, we seek your support in providing for homeless families during extreme flood events through our emergency fund. The monsoons are a particularly difficult time for the homeless who face loss of identity documents, exacerbation of health problems, susceptibility to diseases (including vector-borne diseases such as malaria), disruption of education for children, loss of livelihood, and loss of dignity. The funds will go towards supporting our work, providing food and grains, blankets, and other kinds of emergency aid to homeless families during the monsoon. We need your help to take this first step in making a real impact on the lives of Bihar’s homeless.

Who we are and what we do
Smile Care Foundation is a non-profit that began work 3 years ago with disadvantaged communities living in slums across Patna. In the absence of regular schools or learning opportunities for the children in these communities, Smile Care Foundation has been running Portable Learning Centres for children aged 3 to 14 years. The centres offer a range of exciting learning opportunities for out-of-school children in the slums which enable their integration into the formal education system.
Our children and their families
The families who live here are mostly migrants from neighbouring states and earn their livelihoods by working in construction, driving trucks or tempos, running small stalls, or peddling goods on the street. The slums have no access to water or sanitation. The families are surrounded by overflowing sewage, open drains, and piles of heaped garbage.Consequently, it is the children who pay the highest price. They travel from place to place with their parents and struggle with acute hunger, malnutrition, and disease. Often, family members go days without a wholesome meal.
We began our Nutrition Programme 2 years ago with the aim to provide our children 1 nutritious meal a day, 6 days a week - a small step towards addressing the overwhelming question of malnutrition in the community.
Our children are in the 3-14 year age group who go hungry on most days since their families can't afford a healthy meal. It is incredible how a daily, nutritious, wholesome meal – something we don’t even pause to think about – has had such tremendous impact on the lives and well-being of our children in the last 2 years.
- There are visible changes in the children’s physical appearance. Our teachers have seen a healthy increase in the weight and strength of the students.
- The food has provided much-needed fuel and energy to the children. They are able to concentrate for longer periods during classes and retain concepts better.
- Enrolment in classes has also gone up, with parents keen for their children to receive a healthy meal. We have also been able to instil the importance of healthy food choices in the children and their families. This is a significant change from when parents would leave a packet of chips for their children to munch on all day. It was always the easier, more affordable option.
Will you consider donating today and help us create a big impact on a child’s life? A little bit can truly go a long way. A day’s expense for us is all it would take to fund a meal for 1 child for 1 month.
All contributions to Smile Care Foundation are exempt under section 80G of the Income Tax Act. We will raise receipts for all donations and if you'd like our 80G certificate, we're happy to provide that as well. Smile Care Foundation is committed to doing its best for the communities, and we would be happy to respond to any queries you might have.
